Artful Story Telling For Women
What Should We Wear for a Mommy and Me Photography Session?
One of the most common questions I receive before a Mommy and Me session is what everyone should wear.
The answer is simpler than most people expect.
You do not need perfectly matching outfits, expensive clothing, or a completely new wardrobe. In fact, the most timeless portraits are often created with simple pieces that allow the focus to remain where it belongs: on your connection with your child.
Keep It Simple
I always encourage mothers to think about creating a feeling rather than creating a perfectly coordinated outfit.
Choose colors and textures that work together naturally without trying to match every detail. Soft fabrics, clean lines, and understated clothing tend to photograph beautifully.
Avoid large logos, bold graphics, neon colors, or overly busy patterns that can pull attention away from faces and emotion.
Simple almost always photographs better.
Black and White Works Beautifully
Because much of my work is photographed and presented in black and white, I often recommend black, white, cream, beige, and other neutral tones.
These colors create beautiful contrast and help keep the portraits feeling timeless.
When you look at these photographs years from now, I want you to notice the way your child looked at you, not remember what was trending in stores that particular year.
Styling Is Part of the Experience
You do not have to figure everything out on your own.
Styling is one of the most important parts of creating beautiful portraits, which is why I personally guide every family through it. Before your session, I send wardrobe suggestions and recommendations based on your family, your children, and the overall look we are creating together.
Many clients are surprised by how much thought goes into styling before we ever take the first photograph.
It truly makes a difference.
Choose Comfort
Your child should be able to move, cuddle, run, sit in your lap, and simply be themselves.
The same applies to you.
Choose clothing that allows you to comfortably hold your child without constantly adjusting straps, pulling fabric into place, or worrying about every movement.
When everyone feels comfortable, the photographs naturally feel more relaxed and authentic.
Think Timeless, Not Trendy
The goal of a Mommy and Me session is not to document what Zara, H&M, or Instagram considered fashionable this season.
The goal is to create portraits that still feel beautiful decades from now.
When your child is grown, these photographs will not matter because of the clothes you wore.
They will matter because they remind you of how it felt to hold them.
The best styling quietly supports the story without becoming the story itself.
And the story is always the connection between you and your child.
